The Ritual

Three steps, then stillness

  1. Stand it upright

    Tibetan sticks have no core, so any small bowl of sand, salt, or uncooked rice will hold one. Push it in straight and give it air.

  2. Light the tip

    Let it flame for a second or two, then blow it out. You want a steady ember and one thin line of smoke.

  3. Stay a while

    One stick burns for the better part of an hour. Long enough to sit, read, or let a room settle after a loud day.

The 5%

5%

This incense carries a Tibetan name, a Tibetan recipe, and the image of Tibet's most sacred building. That comes with a debt.

So 5% of every order, off the top and before any profit, goes to a nonprofit working with Tibetan communities. We are vetting partners now and will name the organization here, with receipts.

Origin

What this is

We didn't invent this incense. Tibetan families have rolled it the same way for generations, and a family producer in the Himalayas makes ours in small batches.

We import it, put it in front of people who would never find it otherwise, and send part of the money back. The building on the box is the Potala Palace in Lhasa, winter home of the Dalai Lamas for three hundred years and the most recognized silhouette in Tibet.

Before you burn

Where is it made?

By a family producer in the Himalayas, following a traditional Tibetan recipe. Every box lists its full ingredients.

How long does a stick burn?

The better part of an hour. These are thick sticks with no bamboo core, so they burn slower and more evenly than Indian-style incense.

What does it smell like?

Earthy and herbal. Closer to a monastery than a candle store. It settles into a room instead of taking it over.

Do I need a special holder?

No. A small bowl filled with sand, salt, or uncooked rice works. Push the stick in upright and light it.

How does the 5% work?

5% of every order total, off the top and before any profit, goes to a Tibet-focused nonprofit. We are choosing the partner now from Buddhist-tradition organizations that run programs in Tibet and the diaspora, and we will publish the receipts.
